    St. Charles History

    The first to claim the area of St. Charles were Evan Shelby and William Franklin in 1834.  The township was originally known as Charleston.  However, it was later changed to St. Charles because the name was already taken by another town.  St. Charles became incorporated as a village in 1834.

    The main roads in St. Charles are Main St (east-west), State St (east-west), 1st St (north-south) and Bennett/ Riverside Ave (north-south).  St. Charles is also close-by I-88 and I-355, which gives commuters access to Chicago and other areas.
