    Mokena History
    The McGovney and Van Horne families first settled in the area in the1830s. Gradually, settlement began to grow around the banks of Hickory Creek, and a post office was established in 1838. The Rock Island Railroad was built in this area in late 1852. The community got its name from the Algonquian term for “turtle.”

    Mokena has 9 developed parks. The Mokena Community Park District offers many different events and programs throughout the year.

    The Oaks
    The Oaks is a recreation and fitness center that is 40,000 sq. feet. It has become a gathering place for the community and their recreational needs.

    Local Transit
    Mokena is services by the Rock Island Metra rail and has two stations (Hickory Creek and Front Street) that provide service to downtown Chicago’s LaSalle Street Station.

    Mokena is served by i-80, which runs along the northern border of the village. From i-80, commuters can access i-355 and i-57. The main north-south roads are U.S. Route 45 (LaGrange Rd) and Wolf Rd. The main east-west roads are 191st St, LaPorte Rd and U.S. Route 30.
